When people think of Balinese shopping, the first thing that comes to mind is usually their cheap prices. Little did I know that I’d be scammed by fake designer bags in Bali. I’ve never felt so embarrassed in my life.
Ironically, the knock-off versions of designer bags are extremely popular! There are bustling streets lined with shops and stalls selling them, and you positively won’t get a good deal unless you know how to negotiate. But, that’s a lesson I learned the hard way.
The street market I went to allowed me to browse and touch the product before buying, which added to the authenticity. They even had receipts with the usual brand logo to prove it’s real. Little did I know that it was all fake and I had fallen for it.
I was so ecstatic when I found a branded bag that I didn’t haggle enough; since bargaining is part and parcel of any shopping trip in Bali, I paid about 5 to 7 times more than what it was originally worth. When I went back to find out that I had been duped, I felt so gutted.
What made matters worse was that the guy refused to give my money back. Classic scammers! I couldn’t believe how I had been taken for a ride. Of course, I had no other option but to walk away empty-handed and disappointed.
Luckily, I am not the only one to have been taken in by a fake designer item from Bali. Everyone who I have told this story to has had a similar experience. I guess it’s a case of buyer beware.
I now know that it pays to be extra vigilant and always ask as many questions as you can before purchasing anything, particularly when it comes to designer items. The salespeople will try to pressure you into buying something which you may not want, so shaking off the pressure is key. Research what a genuine item looks like and find out what the going rate is – a bit of knowledge can really go a long way.
Also, make sure to read the ‘fine print’ on the receipts. When I got mine, there was an unusual address printed on it as well as a strange 0800 number. If I had looked closer, I might have noticed a few oddities and queried it further, but sadly I was too caught up in finding the perfect branded bag.
If only I had done a bit of background research, I could have saved myself from this upsetting experience. I now find myself reading reviews online before I make any type of purchase. Additionally, I don’t mind paying extra if it means that I’m at least guaranteed quality.
I am also now more conscious of the fact that appearances can be deceiving. Most of the time, the knock-off versions of designer bags being sold in Bali don’t actually resemble the real thing and I’m glad I did not let this one slip through the net.
It’s true that if something looks too good to be true, it probably is! You certainly get what you pay for, and it’s just as important to remember that not all that glitters is gold. Take it from me, if you ever find yourself looking for a good deal in Bali – proceed with caution!
