My bestie and I were recently discussing the topic of fake designer bags and I was surprised to discover that guys are buying them too. For instance, I had no idea that my buddy Joe had a few knockoff Marc Jacobs bags in his closet. It totally blew my mind and it got me thinking about the implications of it all.
I started to wonder if it’s really okay for guys to be buying fake designer bags. I mean, it seems like something just wrong and a bit sacrilegious. Plus, Joe’s a total ‘style king’ and I couldn’t help feeling that a true fashionista wouldn’t stoop to purchasing a fake item.
But then I started looking into it more and I quickly realised there’s a ton of good arguments in favour of buying a fake bag. For one thing it makes perfect sense if the money isn’t there and there’s still a desire to sport a dope designer bag. It’s also just plain frugal and it may be the only way some guys can afford to buy the latest trends.
I also began to remember what a guiltless pleasure it can be to be ‘in the know’ among some of the big cats in fashion. Guys who buy fake designer bags have a reputation of being savvy, but not necessarily spending to excess. At the same time, these guys can access the trends at a fraction of the cost of the real thing.
Naturally I’m not advocating that guys buy fakes of the real deal. But at the same time, if someone’s got the budget for it, then a good quality forgery can be a great way to express your personal style. And it doesn’t really hurt anyone either, plus it’s not like everyone has to know.
Ultimately, I think it really just boils down to making the right decision for yourself and how you want to present yourself. I mean there are certain situations where it absolutely shouldn’t be done but hey, it’s 2019 and the fashion police ain’t regulating too hard on anybody. After all, that’s the liberty we all have—the ability to choose for ourselves.
Still, it’s important to consider the long-term consequences of the choice, too. Fake designer bags may be cheaper and gets you in the club, but it’s hard to shake someone’s perception of you when they find out the truth. It’s going to take more than a few compliments to undo the damage.
In the end, it’s all just a matter of personal preference and desire for fashion. I think that it’s a tricky subject but if you can go the extra mile for quality then it can be a really stylish and savvy way to show off your fashion sense. Just make sure to keep it on the down low and never advertise it. That way you can maintain your stylish rep without raising any eyebrows.
Then there’s also the fact that guys are now pushing the boundaries of what it means to wear designer bags. It’s no longer considered ‘uncool’ or cliché for guys to have genuine designer bags and instead, it almost has a certain level of respect attached to it. Basically, it’s great to have a designer bag, regardless of whether or not it’s real.
Ultimately, I think it’s all a matter of where you make the call on quality and if it’s worth it to spend extra on the real thing. Is it really necessary to buy the real thing or can you get away with a high quality replica? Everyone’s got their own opinion and I think it’s best to do your research before you make any decisions.
